While talk therapy can be helpful, some clients find it doesn’t fully resolve their issues. My somatic approach emphasizes experiential methods that engage the body and mind together to promote healing.

Why is somatic therapy a preferred approach for trauma?

Trauma is difficult to unlock with talk therapy, because trauma imprints often reside outside of conscious awareness. But these imprints can be found through the body. My process enlists the body as a map of the unconscious to locate core issues and transform them.

One of the skills my clients learn is a form of embodied intelligence called interoception, which is the perception of inner states of the body. Emerging research reveals that strengthening interoception can bring multiple benefits, such as improved emotional regulation, increased empathy, and better decision-making under stress.

Once interoception comes online, we combine it with memory reconsolidation. Using therapies that stimulate the plasticity of memories allows us to reprocess core material. It’s an approach that can change the valence of memories, seed new beliefs, and offer a sense of mastery over one’s personal history.

Somatic therapy can help you…

  • Reduce anxiety and intrusive thoughts

  • Expand your window of tolerance

  • Release old habits

  • Strengthen boundaries

  • Be more embodied in relationships

  • Feel more at ease in your body

“Trauma is not an event that took place in the past. It is the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body. In order to change, people need to become aware of their sensations... Physical self-awareness is the first step in releasing the tyranny of the past.”
